Powered by a 1.2 litre 4 cylinder air cooled engine, it produced when new 40bhp (29.8Kw), delivered to the rear wheels via a 4 speed manual gearbox. Performance for these early Beetle’s was more about reliability and economy and that’s why they did so well in the market and also as rally cars. This model is we presume a de-luxe version, which has a fuel gauge and some extra chrome features, which a lot of the earlier Beetles didn’t have.
